Default Dust-Aid Dust-Shield

I have just sent my 5D to Canon’s RCC for a check and sensor clean.
I was looking into way of keeping the cleaning down to a minimum, as I do not want to be poking round the sensor too much.(I have cleaned the sensor myself a couple of time Not recommended for the faint hearted).
Whilst searching I came across this product has any one any comments?

Dust-Aid Dust-Shield for Canon 5D, 5D mark II is an optically clear shield that sits in the lens mount of a DSLR and is designed to prevent dust particles entering the camera body when lenses are changed. Easy to fit and remove it is a highly useful accessory, especially for photographers working in severe environmental conditions. This optic filter has the highest light transmittance possible which allows for unobstructed image taking.

Not sure about how this may effect the image quality, as anything in front of the lens will degrade a image slightly. I have always been very careful when changing lens, making sure that the one that is going on is nice and clean first with a blower, and having camera body facing downwards before removing lens and keeping it facing downwards until new lens is fitted. And on the odd occasion that I have picked up some dust of sensor, this has been easily removed using my Artic Butterfly.

I use the blower like barry and the arctic butterfly works a treat. Not sure about introducing something between the lens and camera.

Thanks for the feedback.
So do the arctic butterfly brushes work then?
I had had a few different things to get the dust off but I still have never been that happy using them.
I have sent off for the offending item it’s less than £20.
So I might be worth a punt.
The thing I was wondering as you say was the image quality with this right at the back of the lens.
I will do a product review and post some before - after shots
Once I have a nice clean sensor again. Thanks to Canon.

I was recommended the artic butterfly by Barry and Dennis and yes, it really does work but it'll not work on sticky dirt or dust as you will still need to clean the sensor if they hit it.

That reminds me I need to clean the sensor again on the weekend.

I'd be interested to see how you get on with this product and especially some before and after shots.

when i get a real difficult dust speck (not often because i follow barrys method for changing lenses) i use this product

SensorKlear Loupe, Sensor Cleaning Lens aid, CCD, CMOS

if you want to examine the surface in bright light before cleaning its brill it magnifies 6 x and illuminates the sensor surface. I tend to follow this;

set camera manual focus, +1 exposure and f22 then take image of sky check for dust

if dust blow with blower

check with loupe if clear sorted and leave well alone

if still dust, use arctic butterfly which works well

check again using loupe ID where dust spot is and physically remove with lens pen

check again with loupe after blowing again

havent had an issue to date, i know Mello uses wet clean and he wears surgical gloves and he does it well, however the least amount of contact the better. An important bit is keeping your lenses clean and caps on e.t.c and blow them before swapping.

only had to do once and i reckon it was pollen but it worked ok, golden rule BE GENTLE! Arctic butterfly good for most things but the blower is always my first resort rather than last resort.

I'm with you on this one, I have never had anything on my sensors that a blower or the artic butterfly would not remove and my D70 must be 4-5 years old now, but maybe that is one of the advantages of having a couple of body's, as when I go to a event, I take both cameras with different focal length lens fitted so I just swap cameras instead of lens out in the field.
