Default My First Real Camera

Hi,

Im looking for a bit of professional advice on which camera to buy. I already have a few digital cameras but I need a SLR for a photography course.

I am looking for something easy to use with great picture quality and preferably not too expensive!! I have been looking at the Lumix G1 but i dont really know what to compare it too

Any advice??

Hi Lindsay,
that camera isn't a true DSLR, this is from Jessops website :-

Please Note
Although the Lumix DMC-G1 is categorised here as a digital SLR, it does not have a mirror and pentaprism, instead an electronic colour viewfinder based directly on information from the sensor.
With that amount of money, you could easily get a good starter setup from Canon, Nikon or Sony. One big advantage with the big names is the range of accessories and lenses available allow you to really tailor your kit to your own needs. You can get own brand or cheaper off brand alternatives too.

You can now get a Nikon D40 and kit lens off Amazon for £299, a Canon 1000D for £380 or a Sony A200 kit for a crazy £283.
These are by no means your only option, but I'd say better than the Lumix you mention.

Welll, from what Merv says, theres not really alot i'd add to that other than the nikon d4 does not have an internal motor drive for the lenses ( i think, barry should know this) which means you'll need a higher than standard quality lens..(which is not a bad thing!)

Yep D40, D60 and I think the new D5000 don't have the motor in the body, but most people use AF-S lenses now and Sigma and Tamron are including more built in motors. As you say they tend to be the better lens to get anyway.
Not sure what features are 'missing' on the cheaper Canon and Sony bodies, but basically the more you spend the more you get.

Major selling point for the Sony (yes i am biased) is it has vibration reduction built in to the body so any lens used benefits so lenses are less expensive.

Merv, has already answered this one.

Another thing to consider is how they feel in your hand, If I was you then I would pop down to Jessops, and handle all of the contenders to see which one feels more comfortable to use. Then look around for the best price.
