What do I need?
I'm so excited at being able to buy my 400d this week and wondered if any of you had advice to offer on what other essentials/accesories I need besides my compact flash.

No particular order here
A tripod with out a centre post (this turns it into a mono pod)
A cable release to use with the tripod
A bag
Lens cleaner
A sensor cleaning kit
Photoshop CS3 (Elements will work too)
A whibal gray card helps, the small pocket one
A plamp is a help with flower close ups (at the bottom of the linked page)
I’ll stop now and leave room for others to comment

lets see..
for landscapes some thing along the lines off a 28-135mm lens or a 20-35mm wide angle lens
shutter switch... tripod (a good weighted one so it doesn't move in the wind)
a polorizer to stop sun glare and add contrast to pics
Nd grads for landscapes.... would not recommend the cokin filters (lee grads are better)
ND filters for long exposures
i carry too many lenses really but find if i havent got one with me then thats the one i need .... so a bag you can grow into is always good... my lowpro bag is sat in a cuboard as it gets used as a day bag for short trips.. mine was too small for what i needed
you need a landscape or a standard lens
28-70 or 18-55 ... ideally the 28-135 if you have the cash (most standards will do your portrait photography as well and your landscape
for wildlife 75-300mm lens
that would do you for starters i would have thought

Alistair and genese thank you for your help. Think I will need a bank loan to get all that
Are these essential items? I've just bought the camera kit and compact flash and it's going to be a few months before I can buy anything else.

While non are essential, if you are doing landscapes with any degree of seriousness, then the tripod and cable release are getting towards essential

Would probably be worth getting a spare battery, that way you can continue shooting until your battery is totally flat before recharging.
