Compact flash advice needed
I'm planning to buy a canon 400d this week and I'm looking for a compact flash memory card. There are so many to choose from. What's the difference apart from price between for e.g a Sony 4gb costing £36 and Integral 4gb costing £17.

I think that with things such as memory cards, you never know what you’ve got till its gone and gone along with all your lovely pics! Me I use extreme III cards and have never had a problem. Price wise, they are middle of the road. I think that apart from reliability the main difference between cards is the speed of data transfer.
I use a max of 4gb cards and spread out a set of pictures between two cards (I’m lucky in that my camera takes two at once) the idea being that if one card fails then I’ll still have pictures from that location on another. I choose 4bg as a maximum again so as not to have too much on one card.
After a shoot, I’ll copy the images to two separate locations and verify that they have copied before clearing the cards.
With the 40D, shooting RAW you’ll get approx 320 images per 4GB card

Thanks for the advice Alistair. I think I will get the extreme cards too as there seems to be a consensus of opinion in favour of them

Hi genese thanks for that. I didn't realise the extreme cards came with a recovery disk but suppose it's a necessary back up. I will take a look at the "my memory" cards. Where did you get them?

I use Kingston Cards, as another brand to throw into the mix!
Reasonably priced compared to the high end brands and perform OK too.
The "Elite Pro" versions are OK at 50X speed rating, though I recently got a 2GB "Ultimate" which is rated at 133X for around £19, and that is really fast compared to the others when my 30D is on 5FPS!
Whatever you do though - Don't buy bargains off ebay! Almost certainly fakes...

Thanks Pix-al I've seen the Kingston cards. I toyed with the idea of buying a 400d with 4gb memory thrown in from ebay but decided against it. Hopefully ordering my camera today and I can't wait
