£50 from ebay (from Hong Kong) My latest purchase, but I can't get my mitts on it until Santa has made the delivery.
It's what I'm planning for my portrait work.

Being a beginner, I dont know if I would recommend jumping straight in with the 70-200mm F4L. Only reason I say this is that the short end (70mm) will be nowhere near wide enough to take snaps around the house etc, which Mausue will want if she is going to photos of her kids. If you have the budget to buy more than one lens, then it is a great chioce, but you will need something wider (unless you are getting the Kit lens - 18-55mm with the 400D).
You also said you wanted to do landscape shots. The wider the better for landscapes - The Canon 10-22mm is one of the most popular and is an awesome lens. You could get it for under £400 on ebay, but expect to pay more in a UK camera shop.

Thanks for the advice Pix-al. I am getting the kit lens but you've given me food for thought about which others to think about

hi maureen congrates on the new camera..
Raw is more complicated than shooting in jpg .. but when it comes down to it if you can try shooting in raw from the start it will give you a "main" file as good as the day you took it when ever you want it! with jpg the more you do to the image the more degrades and you will find the quality will diminish in time, Raw gives you so much more control over your image deciding how warm or cold... how dark, you can play with the colours and much more without ruining the image
have fun
