Buying a camera - Any advice?

Be careful buying from Asia, as Canon Europe dont support the worldwide warranties, so you may end up shipping back to Hong Kong should you require repair under warranty.
There are UK based companies that offer good deals, if you google hard enough... Warehouse Express is quite good.

The cameras in the FujiFilm s Series are pretty good. Better than a normal point and shoot. They give you the chance to play with manual settings, a great stepping stone before an SLR and prices start at about £149 for the s5200.

Hi Phil,
Just to stop me taking my DSLR out every where I go, my wife bought me a nice Kodak ZD710. This has a 10X optical zoom range and 7.1 megapixels. With both viewfinder (Not true SLR) and screen facilities, a full range of functions including manual overide, it seems to be the ideal camera for a starter, or a spare in my case. She bought it new on offer from £199.00 now selling at £129.00. (Can't go wrong with that).

PS the pics aren't bad either.

Hi Phil, as others have pointed out, try ebay, as I brought another D70 off ebay a few months ago which was in mint condition complete with lens and plenty of accessories including spare battery's all for £250

. Although this is a old model it will still produce nice A3 size prints and as much manual control as you could possibly want. But also going the other way I also brought a secondhand Canon G7 compact camera which has full manual controls for £200

from a local camera shop.
