Digital Photography: lens confusion

If that's just for the camera, then a 40D in Canon seems a good choice (currently about £560). As for lenses, you can start with a kit lens, but they are not too hot on performance. Lenses can be very expensive. Sigma are good and often about a third cheaper than Canon/Nikon.

Amazon is doing the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for £365.99 at the moment, I have been using this lens for a couple of years now and found that it produces nice clean sharp images even in low light conditions with f2.8 throughout it's focal range. But you may want something a bit longer for your plane shots.

Yep i can vouch for the Sig 24mm-70mm 2.8 as well it's a cracking lense and produces nice clean images...
