I have a 40D at mo.
I'm not sure about this, but the theory is that the more pixels per square centimetre the better quality lens you need to handle the detail. So a cheapish lens on a 400D would be OK, but on a high pixel camera such as the 50D or 5DMkII would not give good results. Canon L lenses are the best - I only have one, the 24-105. I got mine used for £600 a few months ago, but they are like gold dust, and a new one (post-price-increase) is now £925 at Warehouse Express. The Sigma 105mm macro and the Sigma 10-20 both work fine on the 50D. The 10-20 won't go on a full-frame (5D), but the macro lens will. The 50mm 1.8 (not an L) is brilliant for £70. All L lenses should work on both crop factor cameras and full-frame. Sigma will only work on both if they are 'DG', rather than 'DC'. But that doesn't mean the DC's are not so good - the 10-20 is great for the money. Assume at least 5% for a UV filter (£45 for a £900 lens) Pointless putting a cheap filter on a good lens.

The 50D should blow up easily to A2 at least. I printed A2 from a 30D (8MP) and sold prints for money. Don't assume people can tell - they can't.

Hi

Body sounds really good and increasingly competitively priced. On lenses I'd recommend L glass if you can stretch to them - though there are good alternatives.

A recent article in Practical photography magazine was comparing cropped with full-frame cameras and the 50D was one of the test cameras. I think it came out worst in the 'sharpness and resolution' test due to the tightly packed pixels. The lens used was a 50mm prime, and the 40D fared much better. There was significant chromatic aberration on the 50D, and not on the 40D. The 5D won that particular test.

What camera to go for will depend on what you want to use it for. There are quite a few differences between the 50D and the 40D, whether they will make a difference to you (or your friend) will depend on your requirements. Personally, if I had that the money to spend, I'd buy another 5D instead. That's because I'm a landscape fan and after using a full-frame camera, a cropped one seems like second best now. For action or wildlife, the 40D or 50D will be much better, though!
