Default CRB Checks

Ok, i'm confused. How can say I get a CRB check done as i'd like to look into childrens portraiture and groups etc. I've just found this info on the CRB site but it says I cannot make the check myself:

The current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check on themselves. In addition, parents who employ a nanny/au pair/babysitter directly cannot apply for a CRB check; however, if an agency supplies the nanny/au pair/babysitter, the agency is entitled to carry out a CRB check.

If you are going to work as a paid employee or as a volunteer for an organisation and your work will bring you into contact with children or vulnerable adults, you may be asked to apply for a CRB check. For example, if you are to work as a teacher, care worker, scout & guide leader, registered childminder, sports coach, youth club worker, foster carer or adoptive parent.

A CRB check may also be required for a range of other types of job or licences. If you have been asked to apply for a CRB check you will need to speak to the person who asked you to apply as they will be able to provide you with the application form.

Anyone know how I can apply? Is the above a recent change?

Paul, You will need an umbrella body, try your local college they will often act as an umbrella organisation, but it will cost you about £55 quid. You should be able to find a local umbrella organisation if not give me a shout.

The last check I did was when I obtained my hawkers licence. This was done through the local constabulary. Can't get better than that.

I may pop down and see them on the weekend to see if they would be able to assist me with it. Thanks for the suggestion Phil.

My wifes a nursing sister of 20yrs and she has just been told she has to be CRB checked believe it or not (random sample and you pay for the privilege) She works on a gynaecological ward and there are no kids involved at all!

The worlds gone mad!

I thought it was the organisation who employs you who has to request the check (confusing)
