I have won, been 2nd, 3rd, mid table and rock bottom. They all tell me what works and what people like or dont like! Also the ones (not me) that win let me learn what others do that is popular and seen as good photography. You are right Rob we have circa 500 members and we have no more than 15 regulars having a go. Glad you cleared your comment as i really do put effort in and win or lose its the taking part and trying to think something new up to satisfy the criteria that is the fun part

Its not about equipment, technical excellence as we all get to judge there is no panel of experts or commitee. So have a go you might win!
