i dont have photoshop but assume the process is similar to paintshop pro which i use. You either take 3 identical shots but exposed, over exposed, and under exposed then merge in the editing software after overlaying exactly or:
take a raw shot then use raw software to produce three images from one, one correctly exposed, one over for highlights, one under for shadows. Then merge in your editing software and do final imaging editing.
Spooks seems to be the main man at this type of shot and i picked up the idea of just one shot and then make 3 exposures from him.
Have a portrait shot which i will post just to see if you think it works, i am not sure.
