when a lens does such a large distance range like the two you have named they have certain distances where they work better ... usually about mid range and on full zoom! a bit of sharpening and a tripod and changing your settings should sort the issue out
You are so right Genese, and im one of the culprits with L series lenses, but i cant afford that £2,500.00 for that specific lense i would die for!! so compromise it is, and i think when its out (as all the stockists i have contacted have'nt got them in yet) i will go for the 150-500mm as it has stabilisation, whereas the 50-500mm has'nt.
