bev both lenses are good the trouble is some of the reviews are written by people comparing the new lenses to the PRO end market ... once you have L glass everything looks soft and fussy comming from other lenses ... as you probly know!
when a lens does such a large distance range like the two you have named they have certain distances where they work better ... usually about mid range and on full zoom! a bit of sharpening and a tripod and changing your settings should sort the issue out
