I find that if I have a scene like this which is in danger of splitting down the centre, taking the shot at a steep angle - even 45deg - turns the strong down-line into a strong diagonal which often works better, and given the nature of this shot I think it might have worked here. As for my age - I am only two years behind you, but of course I can never catch you up!
