Hi Jill, You can't be many miles from me, but anyway back to your question.

The SB800 will work wireless with the D70 (so it should work with the D70s as well). You need to set the camera flash to commander mode from within the camera menu, then on the SB800 set the unit to 'Remote' the channel to 3 and group A. when the camera is set to commander the onboard flash will fire but only to set the exposure and has very little effect on your image, but if you do not want any on-board flash effect then cover the flash with a bit of exposed 35mm film so that only the infrared light will pass to fire the remote flash.
